Embedded vs. External Webcams
Technical and cost factors can affect the performance of embedded webcams. Embedded webcams do not have room for a multi-piece lens stack, making images in shorter distances not as crisp as they would be with better external webcams. External webcams are typically adjustable and allow for a wider field of view, so more than one person can participate at any endpoint. Some external webcams can fine tune in lower light environments to generate better quality images. Some external webcams have built-in stereo microphones offering a high definition-like audio experience.

Many Factors Influence Webcam Quality and Performance
In addition to some of the more obvious ways to evaluate external webcams for business video calling, there is another level of factors to consider, including optical components, fluidity, and autofocus. Also, some webcams have been specifically tested or optimized for use with certain video calling applications.

Test for Yourself
If you are serious about finding a good webcam, create your own “lab” for testing. You can compare two webcams with two laptops or PCs side by side to view any differences to help you make your decision. One could be an embedded webcam, the other an external webcam. Better still: test an actual video call with a colleague in or outside your office.

“Like Being in the Same Room”
In the end, webcams are an important component of your company’s video calling solution. Good webcams can provide a means to improve company communication and collaboration. The best webcams offer you the experience of “like being in the same room”.
