Unagi

“When Unagi's constructing his beats, he creates a distinctively west-coast vibe, usually seeking out old jazzy horns and dirty drums... Unagi is a pretty creative cat well versed in the art of digging. The samples are unrecognizable, and take on a life of their own within Unagi's work, a skill not many producers can truly master.” Okayplayer.com

Unagi is a producer and DJ based in San Francisco. A musician and record collector since childhood, he started making hip-hop tracks in 1997, as a member of Western Massachusetts super-crew Discs of Tron. Flexing a unique sound heavy on obscure samples and homemade beats, he has released four albums and two EPs on his independent label 442 Records.

His growing catalog includes "Unagi" (2003), "Keepin It Eel" (2004), "It Came From Beneath The SFC" (2006), "Unagi For Lovers" (2007), "You and Eye" (2007), and "Reinventing The Eel" (2009), all of which have garnered positive reviews in publications like XLR8R, Okayplayer, Remix, Giant Robot, PopMatters, etc.

He has also released two digi-singles, "Pouring You Mo Champagne" and "Grown Man Flowin," both featuring Bay Area O.G. Motion Man, provided music for several film soundtracks and television commercials, and appeared on numerous compilations.

Unagi is currently finishing up a long-awaited concept album with Motion Man and Philly producer Jethroe, entitled "Adult Situations," plus working on several other collaborative projects and a new instrumental album.
