All hip-hop is not created equal
This is an amazing month of music for the Ultimate Ears’ Artists to Watch program. We feature stellar indie-folk music from DC’s Vandaveer, luscious harmonies from Seattle’s Fleet Foxes, classical music from Boston’s American Double and world hip-hop from Senegal’s Baay Musa. What a fantastic collection of global music!
Baay Musa is part of the Nomadic Wax family and this is a record label/ production company that is worth noting. It was founded in 1999 by Ben Herson when he stumbled upon a thriving hip-hop scene in Senegal, West Africa. In 2001 Herson returned to Senegal with a laptop, a few microphones, and the help of his partner. Together they set up shop and recorded African Underground – a collection of 14 of Dakar’s best MC’s.
Nomadic Wax has gone on to record over 60 international groups and they recently completed the award-winning documentary African Underground: Democracy in Dakar. Please take a moment and listen to a few of their compilations. Music is a voice of a culture and hip-hop in Africa has something to say which is quite different than hip-hop in New York or LA.
