Senegal, Brazil, Laguna Beach, Montreal and Brooklyn. True Global Music.
Artists to Watch - July 2009
The Ultimate Ears Artist to Watch program delivers music from around the globe. This month we feature new music from the reigning queen of the Senegalese hip-hop scene, Sister Fa. We combine those beats with the down-tempo sounds of Brazil with the long-awaited follow-up CD of Grammy nominated singer Céu. Then we add a bit of Slo-Cal surf rock with our very own local Parkaimoon. Throw in a bit of post-modern art with indie heavyweights Handsome Furs from Montreal. And finish the month out with a trio call PROJECT from Brooklyn that consists of a standup bass, cello and beatboxing flute player. This is simply an amazing month for music.
From classical to hip-hop and from all corners of the world, music is dynamic and constantly evolving. It captures a time and space – sights, smells, tastes and ideas. So please take in all of these ingredients as you listen this month and try to think about how a place influences its music and how music influences a place.
Would PROJECT sound the same if they weren't from Brooklyn? Would Sister Fa sound different if she was from Brazil – would she have Céu's demeanor rather than her own? And how would Handsome Furs sound if they did not travel the world recording sounds and inspirations.
How are you different when you open your mind to different music? What changes does it have on your psyche? How does it change your perception? What new places do you travel to when you hear an infinite combination of sounds in ways you never expected? What doors did you accidentally open and who knows where they eventually lead to? Until next month – enjoy and expand!
