Traveling through Space and Time
Ultimate Ears Artists to Watch June edition

June is another phenomenal month of music for the Ultimate Ears’ Artists to Watch program. Not only are we showcasing new music from the internationally best selling goth-metal band Lacuna Coil and the multi-Grammy nominated Afro-Cuban All Stars band, but we are also featuring brand new music from Ocote Soul Sounds – a new band formed from the founders of Antibalas and Grupo Fantasma. This is fantastic music! But what I am most excited about is being able to share old music from the Peruvian Amazon. You need to know about Juaneco y su Combo if you don’t already.

Juaneco y su Combo hail from a different generation and from a place where time means nothing anyways. Their music first surfaced in the 60’s from a small jungle outpost called Pucallpa. At the time, the Amazon was being explored for oil and other natural resources and the sounds of the American psychedelic movement began to penetrate the interior. Juaneco y su Combo were inspired by the new sounds and combined traditional jungle themes and instruments with electric guitars and organs to create the roots of Chica.

I first heard Juaneco y su Combo a few years ago when a friend handed me The Roots of Chicha volume 1 compilation disk. I had heard cumbias and electronic chicha but this was totally different. This was the source – like what jazz is to hip-hop. Anyways, I thought it was interesting music but did not listen to it in heavy rotation. Then I ended up in the Amazon – lost in the Amazon to be precise – but that is a whole different story for another time. The point is, after having experienced the jungle I now get Juaneco y su Combo on a completely new level. They capture a time and place unknown to many. They capture the essence of jungle magicians and shamans and life and trees. So sit back, listen and travel time and space. You have no idea where you are going to end up.
