{"id":32412,"date":"2025-04-01T15:41:19","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T22:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/?p=32412"},"modified":"2025-04-04T09:46:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T16:46:14","slug":"the-face-behind-logitechs-sustainable-packaging-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/01\/the-face-behind-logitechs-sustainable-packaging-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"The Face Behind Logitech\u2019s Sustainable Packaging Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief, packaging isn\u2019t all just paper and plastic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an entire world of R&amp;D hidden behind the little cardboard boxes at your local Best Buy and the ones that Amazon leaves at your front door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bliss Buter-Thompson, Head of Packaging at Logitech, and her team design, develop, and test every single one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Journey to Logitech<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After earning a degree in illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and working a variety of packaging roles at smaller companies, today, Bliss is Logitech\u2019s Head of Packaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company\u2019s Silicon Valley Headquarters is a world away from her hometown Marshfield, Massachusetts, but the artistic sensibilities and problem-solving attitude Buter-Thompson developed during her youth are as impactful as ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of the first packages I had out on the shelves were the most memorable to me; being able to get them approved by clients, go into production, and see them on store shelves is always very cool,\u201d Bliss reminisces. \u201cMy favorites, though, are the ones where we\u2019re solving a complex issue\u2014like sustainable design or durability in packaging design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-32414 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buter-Thompson began her career with the company as a Lead Structural Designer, working alongside engineers on the structural design of the Logitech packaging in California and Taiwan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued her progression as a manager leading the company\u2019s Silicon Valley packaging design team, eventually stepping into her current role as Head of Packaging. Her latest evolution came within the past several years, when Logitech\u2014and the packaging industry at large\u2014began to place a much greater emphasis on driving sustainable packaging design..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>BEYOND THE BOX<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith packaging, our primary focus is to protect the product, but we also need to provide the ideal customer experience,\u201d Buter-Thompson explains. \u201cWe\u2019re the first touchpoint our users have with the brand and the product\u2014and there are so many things, from graphics to structure, that we need to make sure we\u2019re accounting for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOn the shelf, we need to differentiate ourselves; inside of the package, we need to make sure products safely get to where they need to be without any damage,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-32408 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-300x167.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-1129x628.png 1129w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-1536x854.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-750x417.png 750w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction-1140x634.png 1140w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/plastic-reduction.png 1591w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, much of the team\u2019s efforts have been in increasing recyclable and renewable materials in packaging, encouraging clear communication of materials used, sharing sustainability findings externally, and generally minimizing environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE PUSH TOWARDS ELIMINATING SINGLE USE PLASTIC\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32413 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog-2-300x154.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog-2-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-blog-2.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the past five years, we\u2019ve really focused on the idea of reducing the use of single-use plastic,\u201d says Wesley Wang, Senior Manager of Asia Packaging Design. \u201cIt\u2019s a really hot topic in the packaging industry, and it\u2019s something we are constantly building towards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Logitech, plastic hang tags designed to allow boxes to reside on retail shelves have been replaced by paper ones; plastic seals have also given way to paper labels; polypropylene laminate, a popular thermoplastic that receives widespread use in the shipping and packaging industry, has been replaced by a more sustainable and water-based aqueous coating, a decision which has saved Logitech countless square meters of plastic lamination in one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Logitech uses responsibly-sourced, FSC\u2122-certified paper packaging in 19% of its products, with 73% of new product launches utilizing this paper alternative to single-use plastic packaging. This comes at a time when the global shipping and manufacturing industry produces hundreds of metric tons of plastic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per year\u2014and environmental stewardship is more important than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, though, removing plastic from packaging can be complex\u2014and has required incredible levels of innovation by several Logitech packaging experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-32415 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog-3-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog-3-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/blog-3.png 384w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address these issues, new material innovations are developed within Logitech\u2019s packaging department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to prevent dusting, scuffing, scratching, or other damage that may occur during shipping or on shelves, the company has developed a pulp paper alternative to thin plastic bags that serves the same protective function but offers additional benefits. This material, obtained by chemically or mechanically separating fibers from recycled wood, paper, and other elements, supports post-processing techniques such as debossing and printing company logos and patterns. It can even be transformed into bubble paper for cushioning, reducing the number of components needed and enhancing the user experience. Additionally, end consumers can retain and reuse it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you first see and touch it, it feels just like cotton fabric\u2014soft, comfortable, and textured. But it\u2019s actually made of wooden fibers,\u201d Wang says proudly during an interview as he holds up his team\u2019s latest exploration. &#8220;100% physically recyclable and repulpable where recycling facilities are located!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another use for the pulp material is in molded hangtabs. More rigid than paper hangtabs, molded pulp hangtabs are patented by Logitech and serve to replace the plastic hang tabs used in retail displays. While the molded pulp tags are Logitech\u2019s intellectual property, the company has shared much of its guidelines, work, and research\u2014including the hangtabs themselves\u2014with external stakeholders for use throughout the shipping and manufacturing industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has cemented Logitech as a leader in packaging and helped spread important sustainability knowledge throughout the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve given companies access to our pulp hangtabs and paper technology, which has positively affected sustainable packaging design even outside of Logitech,\u201d explains Wang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32407 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-1117x628.png 1117w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-750x422.png 750w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy-1140x641.png 1140w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pebble-keys-casestudy.png 1702w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just this week, the company made even further strides by eliminating single-use plastic and plastic clamshell packaging from its affordably-priced, hallmark mice categories. With the transition now nearly complete, the magnitude of this initiative is estimated to remove 660 tons of plastic and reduce 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the air, equivalent to eliminating over 37 million single-use plastic water bottles annually. The global transition to paper packaging across tens of millions of products continues across various retailers, with expected completion dates by the end of 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn addition to packaging, my role right now is looking to amplify sustainable solutions within the design organization,\u201d Buter-Thompson explains. \u201cI\u2019m leading a task force along with some other folks around the company, and we\u2019re working directly with the sustainability and engineering teams to create some very exciting collaborative projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A Leader for a Sustainable Future<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32416 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-222x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-222x300.png 222w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss-465x628.png 465w, https:\/\/www.logitech.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bliss.png 729w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inland portion of Marshfield is less a town and more a series of small communities stitched together by road and river.
