Keeping students from being distracted is a persistent challenge for educators, and it’s getting even harder. Physical comfort, background noise, and obstructed views can all distract students and decrease their engagement. According to a recent survey by Kahoot, 59% of teachers note their students are less engaged in class today compared to previous yearshttps://kahoot.com/press/2022/07/13/teacher-survey-2022-student-centered-learning/.It’s time for a multi-angled approach to addressing distractions in today’s tech-enabled classrooms.

Edtech to Boost Physical Comfort

According to a survey conducted by Logitech and EdWeek Research Center, 74% of educators say students’ physical comfort while using educational technology impacts their level of engagement in learning. Yet less than half of those same educators say students are “very comfortable” while using different types of hardware accessories. In fact, 60% of students 10 to 17 years old said they experience discomfort while using a laptop.Courtenay Harris, Leon Straker, Survey of physical ergonomics issues associated with school childrens’ use of laptop computers, International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, Volume 26, Issue 3, 2000. When the barriers to learning are removed and students are physically comfortable they are less distracted.

How to do it

Whether students are using a desktop, laptop, or tablet while they learn, having the right accessories can make a big difference. The intuitive designs of the Logitech M325 Mouse and K580 Keyboard support good posture even as students are continuously growing and changing. Students can also use the Rugged Combo keyboard case to move around their classroom with their iPad and stay active while using different modes like type, sketch, watch and read.

Students need physical comfort as they develop new skills, like handwriting, as well. Styluses such as the Logitech Crayon for iPad and the Pen for USI-enabled Chromebooks provide comfortable grips and accuracy as students learn and master handwriting, algebra problems, and other skills.

Edtech to Cut Through Classroom Noise Pollution

The average classroom can be as loud as 77 decibels — twice as much as what the World Health Organization recommends. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7575397/,https://www.who.int/europe/news-room/fact-sheets/item/noise . Classrooms are so noisy that students are distracted and can’t understand what their teachers say. https://www.hear-it.org/classrooms-far-too-noisy Plus 75% of teachers report their voice is hoarse and strained from teaching Logitech and EducationWeek Survey August 2022 .

One way to cut through the distraction of classroom noise pollution is with a microphone. Microphones amplify the voices of educators with little additional effort, making sure instruction reaches the recommended levels of 15 to 20 decibels higher than ambient classroom noise.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7575397/ .

Headsets also help minimize classroom noise. This edtech improves audio when students are watching a video or listening to instructions on their devices and enables students to be heard clearly by educational apps, decreasing potential technology-based frustration while learning.

How to do it

All students and educators deserve to hear and be heard clearly. With the Logitech H111 Headset, Snowball, and Yeti Nano they can. The H111 headset is compatible with multiple devices, helping students hear what they need to and interact with digital learning apps easily. More than 80% of students felt it was easier to focus with a Logitech headset.Logitech Middle School Student Survey 2020 The Snowball and Yeti Nano microphones enhance teachers’ voices, enabling crystal clear instruction in face-to-face and remote learning environments.

Edtech for a Clear Picture

More educators are using videos for instruction. Videos are excellent tools to increase accessibility, connect with students in hybrid learning environments, or to record content so students can review lessons later. In this approach, one factor that is often overlooked is the ability to clearly see. A clear sightline and picture can make a big impact. Research shows that when instructors appear in videos and students can clearly see body language cues and eye contact, student engagement increases.Stull, A. T., Fiorella, L., & Mayer, R. E. (2020). The case for embodied instruction: The instructor as a source of attentional and social cues in video lectures. Journal of Educational Psychology. Advance online publication.

How to do it

Educators can make sure classroom instructions are delivered with a rich, realistic picture no matter where students are learning with Logitech’s Rally Bar Mini + Tap conferencing tool. Students will be able to see the teacher or others clearly, keeping learning focused and fun!

The Logitech Scribe is a whiteboard camera designed for a modern classroom. The high-quality camera allows students to see clearly whether they are in the front row or all the way in the back of the classroom.

With these education-first tools, educators can decrease distractions and keep students engaged in different learning environments throughout the entirety of the school day!
