Logitech funds research into sustainable materials at EPFL

Logitech is excited to announce that we will fund breakthrough research into more sustainable materials at EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This step is part of a joint initiative with Nestlé, SIG and other industry players, and furthers Logitech’s commitment to better the world for future generations. It also furthers our decades-long, collaborative relationship with EPFL, one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions, whose history is entwined with Logitech’s.

Together, the companies have committed to provide five million Swiss francs over ten years. The funding will support a new chair for sustainable materials research within EPFL’s Institute of Materials. The chair, to be appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor, will be responsible for developing and implementing a new research program on sustainable materials at EPFL. Research areas of interest will address critical questions, such as the overall environmental impact of materials and the exploration of bio-based, bio-degradable and recyclable materials, including high-performance paper-based barrier materials, that could help to address environmental concerns about plastic packaging, and more.

Martin Vetterli, EPFL president, commented: “Our specialists are already committed to developing cutting-edge, new materials that will help the world get rid of its dependency on petrol-based products. Building strong relationships with industrial partners is key to have these new products reach the customers in the most efficient way.”

Logitech’s support of EPFL’s research into more sustainable materials is the latest step in more than a decade of active work to minimize our climate footprint while designing products that connect people, every day, to the digital experiences they care about. At the end of last year, we committed to being part of global efforts to co-create a more sustainable world with 1.5°C climate pledge and a 100% renewable electricity goal. We also announced that our gaming portfolio had been certified CarbonNeutral®.

Prakash Arunkundrum heads up Logitech’s sustainability efforts, as well as our global operations. He commented: “Logitech is excited to collaborate with EPFL to deliver breakthrough research into more sustainable materials. It’s an important area of research that can lead to the kind of innovations required to meet the world’s critical, environmental challenges. Logitech is working with dedication to minimize our environmental impact. It has to be a collaborative effort, and we’re grateful to collaborate with EPFL, Nestlé and SIG on this occasion.”
