As part of Logitech’s commitment to expand human potential in work and play, our Technology Office team is venturing into an intersection of engineering sciences and cognition. By deepening our understanding of human behavior, we aim to positively impact educational experiences for students and teachers alike.
One example of this venture was our partnership with a renowned medical school in France, Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), during the COVID-19 pandemic. Logitech participated as an engineering partner in a research collaboration, led by Prof Yann Suhan Senova from UPEC, that sought to address a pressing challenge many institutions faced during this time: keeping students engaged in remote learning environments.
Elevating Education Through Innovation
The university wanted to make sure that it was doing what it could to optimize student performance and ensure students remained attentive during virtual classes. To support this ambition, Logitech participated in UPEC’s research by adapting Logitech’s G Pro X headsets as academic prototypes used in the study. The headsets were modified with EEG sensors, allowing researchers to study physiological attention signals during lectures, especially as learning settings shifted from traditional classrooms to remote setups.
Could they detect patterns when attention began to drift? What adjustments, such as changing in teaching styles, interaction levels, or even subtle tweaks such as audio volume, could help recapture and sustain focus?
The Study at a Glance
To answer these questions, UPEC carried out a year-long data collection, supported by Logitech’s engineering contributions. The study integrated multiple streams of physiological data, including brain activity, eye movement, and heart rate, to gain insights into how students’ attention changed during remote learning. While direct measurement of attention levels are highly variable and subjective, the team was able to detect shifts of attention and provide individualized neurofeedback aiming at helping students improving their attention again.
This project explored new ways to collect data to help researchers and educators better understand patterns of attention in virtual learning environments. Beyond improving student performance during the pandemic, the data has broader implications for the future of education and beyond, sparking curiosity about how optimized human-device interactions can enhance experiences across various fields.
What’s Next
This initiative represents just the start of Logitech’s journey in enabling performance. We endeavor to combine innovation best practices, user-centered design and deep technology with exceptional domain expertise.
