Ever wondered what happens when a legendary audio mascot goes from an angry box illustration to an iconic, pixelated audio guide?
When Suguru Ogata, Lead UX Designer for Yeti 2, found out that he had the opportunity to work on the new Logitech G Blue Yeti 2 microphone, he remembered seeing a cartoon Yeti mascot on the mic’s original box. He was inspired by this drawing and decided to bring that character to life in a fun and playful way, making him more welcoming and actually part of the product functionality. Hence, a modern Yeti was born.
The New Yeti and His Purpose
“When I first started sketching the Yeti character, I knew right off the bat that I didn’t want to just design a character but make a function that goes along with it. So the Yeti is not just playful, but gives purpose to that character,” said Suguru. “The goal then became clear: How can we change the Yeti’s facial expression to show the audio state?”
Instead of asking your stream chat or friends how your mic sounds, the onscreen Yeti now gives you instant, expressive visual cues about your gain and audio levels. If the Yeti is sleeping, that means your microphone is muted. If the Yeti is happy and confident, he is signaling that your audio-gain performance is ideal. Lastly, if he is angry or overwhelmed, then he is warning you that the audio is clipping. The Yeti icon is also fully customizable so you can add your own avatar if you choose.
“The ears of the Yeti have the knob shape that matches the knob on the physical microphone. His head is also intended to match the curve of the microphone itself,” said Suguru. “The design was simple, the challenge then became: How do we translate this line work back into pixels?”
The Unique Journey
The development of the Yeti 2 didn’t start the “traditional” way. It started with a comic book.
“I wanted to establish a story of why the user would want this microphone,” said Suguru. “This comic functioned as a guideline of whether it makes sense to the user or not when adding new features and innovations throughout the design process. I also wanted it to be fun and not boring.”
To ensure every feature served a specific player need, Suguru mapped out user journeys frame-by-frame. The opening panels identified core users and their distinct motivations, while subsequent pages illustrated real-world scenarios, from solo game streaming to multi-person podcasts. This story-first approach ensured that every functional update directly supported creators’ needs.
“The panels took us through the customer journey. The original panels showed the problems the customers were facing that made them want to purchase a microphone. The next panel showed them ordering the microphone and then receiving it, even detailing what’s actually on the packaging. Finally, the last panels depicted how the customer would activate the microphone and connect it to their computer. Since Yeti was known for plug-and-play microphones, we wanted to keep it that way,” said Suguru.
Suguru made all the Yeti sketches, the comic and its entire storyline, and the final Yeti design himself.
“Since Day 1, I’ve used this comic so we could have a visual storyboard that the team could always rely on and go back to if we needed a reminder of the why.”
Honoring the Classic Yeti Shape
“I personally always wanted to bring this character and this legacy back because I have always been a fan of Blue’s iconic microphones. The Yeti will also be featured on the packaging as a nod to the original Yeti on the box,” said Suguru.
Bringing the Yeti 2 to life required extensive prototyping, with specific builds focused solely on perfecting the screen interface and Yeti animation. Despite the various prototypes, sticking to the classic, instantly recognizable silhouette was still a no-brainer.
“Since we are bringing back the legacy from 15 years ago, we wanted to keep that original shape. When it comes to the design, we are keeping the same DNA so it is an evolution of the original product. However, for the complex technology inside, Yeti 2 is a complete revolution from the original. In the end, we wanted everyone to still recognize the iconic Yeti shape when they see it.”
The Yeti character symbolizes the fun and playfulness of streamers using the microphone while hiding the complex technology on the inside. The Yeti has always been about presenting the highest quality in a simple, plug-and-play format. With the design being an evolution of the original, the result is a microphone that feels familiar at a glance, yet is fundamentally transformed on the inside—giving creators greater confidence in their sound than ever before.
