DECT vs Bluetooth: Logitech Proves Bluetooth Can Handle High-Density Offices

For decades, offices have relied on DECT technology for secure, reliable wireless audio performance. But in the past six years, improvements in Bluetooth audio technology have closed the gap on the advantages of DECT.

In Logitech’s new whitepaper, “From DECT to Bluetooth: Rethinking Enterprise Wireless Audio”, we put the Zone Wireless 2 headset to the ultimate test to prove that modern Bluetooth isn’t just “good enough” for the enterprise, it might actually be better.

Putting Zone to the Test

To demonstrate the robustness of modern Bluetooth in high-density environments, we conducted three tests comparing DECT headsets to Zone Wireless 2, our top-of-the-line business headset built for power users wherever and however they may work.

  1. The Extreme Stress Test: In a controlled lab environment, we created a “worst-case scenario” with 50 active headsets in a tight space with heavy Wi-Fi interference to see how they performed under immense pressure.

  2. Real-World Corporate Test: We gave headsets to 110 employees at a high-traffic financial services office for a full workday to provide insights on usability, satisfaction, and performance against the unpredictability of a real corporate workday.

  3. The Scalability Test: We teamed up with Intel to compare the performance of native Bluetooth vs. dongles as the number of active users scaled from one to 24.

The Verdict: Four Reasons to Rethink Your Enterprise Setups

The data is in, and the performance gap that once favored DECT has officially closed. After analyzing results from the three tests, we’ve identified four findings that prove modern Bluetooth, and specifically Zone Wireless 2, is ready for the enterprise.

  • Finding 1: Audio That Holds Up
Even under the most strenuous conditions, Bluetooth audio remains robust and clear. Zone Wireless 2 maintained high-quality audio and mic performance, based on objective and subjective test results, and call quality was on par with DECT.
  • Finding 2: Proven Stability
Bluetooth connection proves to be highly stable. In our scalability test, error rates stayed well below the “good experience” threshold, even in crowded rooms.
  • Finding 3: Less Disruptive
We discovered that Bluetooth dropout behavior is ultimately less disruptive. While DECT dropped connections were less frequent, dropout times could be up to 1.6 seconds. Bluetooth interruptions are so short (less than 0.6 seconds), you may not even notice them.
  • Finding 4: Exceeding Enterprise Expectations
Our real-word corporate test proved that Zone Wireless 2 is built for how people actually work today. Features like multi-device connections and flip-to-mute microphones significantly enhance workflows while superior range lets users roam from their desks up to 115 feet.
