For years, I’ve been obsessed with mobile productivity driving mobile-powered solutions with a mobile-first mindset. Before joining Logitech as the Head of Product for Mobile and Audio Solutions two years ago, my career took me through BlackBerry, Samsung, and Meta. I’ve spent decades thinking about how to make tech more human, frictionless, and yes, more mobile.
Yet, when I looked at how we work today, I noticed a major disconnect. We have incredibly sleek, powerful phones, tablets and laptops that we carry with us from meeting to meeting or into a coffee shop. But when it comes to the humble yet mighty mouse? Most of us leave it behind.
Now, don’t get me wrong, at Logitech, we’ve built some of the best mice on the planet. If you’re at a dedicated desk, the mastery of the MX series provides an amazing experience. I’ve personally used the MX master mouse since the first generation. If you want something comfortable for everyday use, the Signature Series is ideal. But as we looked at the evolving landscape of hyper-mobile work, we realized there was still a gap in the lineup: an ultra-portable mouse.
Our consumer insights team found a staggering stat during our research: 72% of people who work from public spaces and while commuting, have a mouse already but only 26% take it with them on the go. Because it’s either too heavy or bulky to carry around. People want more precision over a trackpad and touchscreen, but they don’t want a massive bump stretching out their pockets, taking up more space in their stuffed bags, or clashing with their mobile setup aesthetic in a public space. For people like me, your tech setup in a coffee shop is a form of personal and professional self-expression. I want it to look sleek and not cramp my style!
We knew we had to build something entirely different. Something pocketable.
Enter Mobi Fold, Logitech’s first ultra-portable, foldable mouse.
Pushed the Foldable Frontier
We had key learnings from Casa Pop-Up Desk and our other mobile solutions that shaped our foldable design approach. Our mobile design and engineering teams leveraged their expertise in thin/lightweight/durable materials, hinges and HW/SW/FW integration to develop something that was never done this well before. We made great development progress with good prototypes and we pushed the boundaries even further to enhance the experience. We took the time to obsess over the details. We continually refined the design to make it feel even more natural and to enhance overall precision. We fine tuned the length of the mouse, angles of the fold, extended the sidewalls on the front to improve comfort, and we modified the feet for an improved gliding experience on multiple surfaces.
We addressed more nuanced user feedback too. When you create a mouse that folds, you introduce a new human behavior when interacting with it: the act of physically folding the device while it’s turned on. Early user tests showed some users were accidentally triggering clicks when folding it close. So we built an on-device AI model that helps prevent unintentional clicks by recognizing when to disable the buttons. This made the experience even more frictionless for users.
Built for the Way We Move
Just before this launch, I was packing for a trip. As I slid the Mobi Fold into my cross body bag alongside my Keys-To-Go 2 and Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, my current mobile workspace, it hit me just how far the team has come. It takes an incredible amount of cross-functional alignment and drive to take a concept this ambitious and execute it beautifully.
We didn’t just want to make a portable mouse; we wanted to unlock a whole new way to be productive anywhere.
What I’m most excited about as Mobi Fold hits the world isn’t just seeing it on a shelf. I can’t wait to sit in a coffee shop and see someone pull it out of their pocket, unfold it, and get to work—to see it naturally integrate into people’s daily, fluid lives.
