Is Dictation Faster Than Typing? How To Use Voice To Add To Your Typing Productivity

For decades, the keyboard was the physical extension of human thought. Today, a voice-first trend is bringing a new kind of productivity to our lives.

The rhythmic clicking of keys has long been the drumbeat of the modern office. But as we move through 2026, another sound has joined the chorus. A softer, more conversational murmur. It’s the song of vibe coding, brainstorming, WhatsApp messaging and Slack chats.

This change is not just a niche trend. After long years of promise, finally, voice is going mainstream. At least, according to The Wall Street Journal, there is a rising trend of office workers chatting to AI to dictate their messages which is “just a little awkward”.

Awkward or not, it’s clear the knowledge workers are looking for other human ways to interact with the digital world, at work and in daily life.

Makes more sense: adding speech to the sense of touch

The keyboard has been our primary connection to the digital world for over a century. But even the best typists are limited by their fingers. Most of us type between 40 and 60 words per minute. Our thoughts move much faster than that.

This is where speech comes in. We speak at a pace of 130 to 150 words per minute. Research from Stanford University shows that dictation is now three times faster than typing. It is also more accurate than ever. Modern AI tools now reach a 99% accuracy rate.

Adding speech to your workflow does not mean throwing away your keyboard. It means using the right tool for the right task. Use your keys for data, editing long-form and precision. Use your voice away from your desk, for short-form messages, informal chats, drafting and brainstorming.

This hybrid approach solves a major problem: cognitive load. Typing requires mental effort. You have to think about spelling and finger placement. When you speak, that friction disappears. You can focus entirely on your ideas. This is why doctors and lawyers have used dictation for years.

Now, technology has made voice accessible for everyone. Instead of tediously drafting a 300-word AI prompt, you can spill it out in seconds, allowing AI to react to your intention as only AI can. In the same way, voice is a great way to brainstorm, with AI as your sparring partner.

Logitech tools make for a smooth transition back and forth, from voice to keyboard to voice. The MX Keys S, for example, features a dedicated talk-to-text key. You do not have to change your habits to start speaking. You just tap a button and start talking.

The popular Wispr Flow app does the same thing – push a button on any keyboard and you’re up and running. Or rather talking. Bottom line, at your desk, keyboards bring the power of your voice to your fingertips.

Clear speech

AI is only as accurate as the audio it receives. To master this trend, your desk tools must evolve. They need to prioritize audio clarity and easy integration. You need hardware for the voice revolution.

Here is how the right setup transforms your experience:

  1. Logitech MX Keys S keyboard

With this keyboard, you can switch between typing and speaking without breaking your focus. It has a dedicated button that opens your computer’s voice tool immediately. It helps you move quickly from entering data to dictating a summary, without losing your flow. Similarly, any keyboard can give you access to your computer’s native voice dictation or to an app like Wispr Flow or Willow Voice. You can even set up a shortcut through Logitech’s Options+ software.

  1. Logitech G Yeti GX mic or Logitech G Astro A50 X headset

The Yeti GX is a specialist tool for the home office. It was originally built for elite streamers. It is a dynamic microphone with a supercardioid pickup pattern – a fancy way of saying it ignores background noise like air conditioners, chatter or traffic. It focuses only on your voice, giving your computer the clean audio it needs to transcribe your words accurately. Also, the Logitech G Astro A50 X headset is one of many gaming headsets that also feature similar software for voice clarity.

  1. Zone Wireless 2 headset

Gone are the days of huddling close to a microphone to ensure only your voice is picked up. The Zone Wireless 2 headset uses AI to suppress background noise on both ends of your call – the perfect tool for a noisy office. While you talk, the smart microphones block out background noise. It also silences the room around you, letting you focus on your thoughts without being distracted by what’s happening nearby.

  1. Logitech MX Brio webcam

If you work in a hybrid environment, the MX Brio is a powerful all-in-one choice. This webcam has microphones that stop the echo of your room from reaching the recording. You get high-quality video and clear voice capture from one device on your desk.

  1. Logitech MX Master 4 mouse

Dictation is perfect for the first draft. Manual precision is better for the final edit. The MX Master 4 is the essential partner for this workflow. After you speak a long draft, this mouse is great for moving rapidly through long documents. Its quiet buttons mean you can make corrections without the microphone picking up the sound of your clicks. You can even use Logitech’s Options+ software to embed a Wispr Flow macro directly into one of its Action Ring’s dynamic on-screen “bubbles”, helping you engage your microphone instantly.

A future we can touch and hear

For over a century, we have expressed our thoughts through the reliable key. Today, we are moving away from a world where we only touch our technology. The keyboard did not replace the mouse. Nor will voice replace the keyboard. Each is just a powerful new partner for the other, working in symphony together.

At the heart of all these input devices is a powerful truth – they help us extend our potential through our human senses. Touch, voice, hearing, sight. Each has its role and is incremental to the next.

What is the first thing you’ll say to your computer today?
