Best Study Spots Outside the Library to Stay Productive

For years, conventional wisdom told you to find a single study sanctuary. The theory was simple: study in the same space, stay focused and let your memories anchor to your surroundings. But cognitive psychology actually says differently.

When you study in only one location, your knowledge is tied there. In fact, years ago, research by psychologists Smith, Glenberg and Bjork revealed that students who varied their study locations across different rooms performed 40% better on memory recall tests than those who stayed in the exact same spot. Changing your environment forces your brain to detach the facts from the background scenery, ensuring you can access that knowledge anywhere.

So if you’re struggling to stay focused at your desk, you just need to diversify your space and pack the right gear to stay productive on the move. Here are a few study spots you should scope out this school year.

1. Local Cafes

Your favorite coffee shop doesn’t just have to be a fix for caffeine. Cafes are an ideal place to train your brain to focus amidst ambient noise like baristas chatting and coffee machines whirring. Scope out a table where you can sip a latte as you finish your paper. Avoid dealing with a heavy backpack by packing a light setup to emulate your desk, such as the Mobi Fold foldable mouse and Keys-To-Go 2 ultra-portable keyboard. They’ll take up little space in your bag, but will turn any bistro table into an instant workstation.

2. Shared Spaces

Sometimes being surrounded by others makes a heavy workload more enjoyable. Setting up in the living room or your dorm common area keeps you isolated from library fatigue. Plus you may even find others studying for the same class. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your studies for your social life. Lightweight tools like the Pebble 2 Combo are quiet enough to keep the peace in shared spaces and easy to toss into your bag when it’s time to transition back to your room.

3. Outdoors

A sunny day is a sign to pack up your books and blankets for an outdoor serotonin study session. Finding a patch of grass or a park bench introduces natural light that resets your attention span. Bring along a compact, portable speaker like the MINIROLL to play a lo-fi focus playlist to block out any distractions. And when your brain inevitably hits a wall, switch to your favorite get-up-and-dance tunes for a quick break before diving into the next chapter.

A dedicated desk is still a good anchor for a distraction-free study zone. But the next time you feel restless or distracted, take that as your sign to pack up your gear and switch up your space.
