A PRODUCT LIFE-CYCLE APPROACH
To achieve design excellence, we need to consider more than just how our products look and feel. We also consider the far-reaching environmental impacts across the full life-cycle of our products. We are transparent in sharing our products’ impacts and we use this approach to drive visible improvements.
We evaluate potential environmental impacts at every stage of product development—from material and design choices, to manufacturing, to customer satisfaction and end-of-life recycling. As our product portfolio grows, we identify drivers of environmental impact and interactions, and identify consumer behaviors.
Climate change caused by human activity is one of the biggest challenges of our generation. The scale of action required is no longer about the individual but how we can collectively make a difference.
The carbon footprint of our manufacturing facility has been reduced to net zero carbon emissions, through the purchase of renewable electricity and carbon offsets. As part of our commitment to climate action, we will maintain this CarbonNeutral® status year-on-year, and purchase 100% of our manufacturing electricity from renewable energy sources.
Design for Sustainability (DfS)
We design experiences that people love. Our innovation process brings together superior design, engineering, and consumer insights to build a diverse and growing portfolio. For us, a truly sustainable design considers environmental and social impacts from the moment raw materials are sourced right through to end-of-life.
We want to make Logitech products more circular. Virgin materials should be avoided, in favor of recycled materials. We use post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, to give a second life to end-of-life plastic and help reduce our carbon footprint. We are applying PCR at scale across the company, targeting our largest product portfolios for the most impactful carbon reduction.
Well-designed packaging is key to the product experience - it ensures that out-of-box set-up is seamless and that products are well protected. Good packaging is environmentally sustainable packaging, so we are constantly innovating to reduce the environmental impact of our designs by reducing weight, maximizing the use of renewable resources and ensuring the recyclability of our materials. We draw on international practice to deliver consistently lower impact packaging. As part of our continued long-term vision, we will be adding carbon transparency labels to our packaging as well.
We are aware of the urgent need to take climate action. By being open and transparent about our impact, we believe we can drive better design decisions in our own teams and more informed purchasing decisions among our consumers.
In 2020, we became the first consumer electronics company to commit to providing carbon impact labels on product packaging across our portfolio. We are inviting other companies to join us in driving positive change by providing full transparency on their products. It will take an industry-wide effort to truly make a difference.
Approximately half of our annual revenue is generated from products we manufacture in-house. We have more than 30 years of in-house manufacturing experience and provide direct employment to more than 3,500 people. Our manufacturing activities consist primarily of final assembly and testing. Our governance framework for responsible manufacturing is founded on our commitment to legal compliance, the RBA Code of Conduct and audit compliance and ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 international good practice.
Manufacturing of computer peripherals and electronic devices requires a diverse mix of hundreds of parts, materials, and components. The materials we use in our products are produced by a supply chain that extends across the world.
As a responsible company, we consider the full life-cycle footprint and handprint of our products. We work with our suppliers to review material specifications, test products and components, and identify potential risks to human health or the environment across the full life-cycle of our products. We consider environmental impacts beyond our sourcing and manufacturing operations, considering typical end-of-life scenarios.
End-of-life recycling and Circularity
Our ambition is to empower consumers to extend the life of electronic devices, components, and materials. We finance recycling worldwide and we are working to innovate and develop more circular production and consumption systems, to meet the growing consumer demand for electronics, while also addressing the need to conserve natural resources, biodiversity, and carbon sinks.
