How to Remove Scroll Lock & Other Common Keyboard Locks

What Is Scroll Lock on a Keyboard?

Scroll Lock is a function that turns your keyboard’s arrows into a scroll wheel. Without scroll lock, your arrow keys shift your cursor or selection up or down. When the scroll lock is on, the arrow keys scroll your window up and down instead.

Scroll lock was originally introduced at a time when scroller wheels on mice didn’t exist. The scroll lock enabled users to easily scroll up and down on a page without having to click and drag the scroll bar.

Today, the Scroll Lock is used in only a few applications, such as Microsoft Excel. In Excel, Scroll Lock allows you to scroll through a sheet while still keeping the same cell highlighted.
